Chicken Soup With Rice

Title: Chicken Soup With Rice

Category: Spider-Man/Avengers Crossover

Characters Who Make An Appearance: Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Aunt May, Tony Stark/Iron Man

Relationships In Story: None

Author: Convenient Alias

Story Summary: Bruce meets a young man named Peter in a bookstore. A young man who seems to be researching how radiation can be used to enhance the human body. “That sounds like a terrible idea. How about we…um…get some coffee and talk about it?”

gammathetaalpha’s thoughts: This one-shot is a heartwarming little story about Bruce meeting an entirely average college student in a book store. The young man seems to be researching ways to heal or strengthen the human body using gamma radiation. Bruce sees the potential disaster, and invites the boy for coffee to persuade him out of a similar fate to his.

I especially liked it because of the friendship that develops between Peter and Bruce. Both are nerds with quiet personalities (identities) and they get along well. The author did a wonderful job of emphasising this canon quality.

The story ends with a feeling like it only has just begun. Personally, I like this quality, because it’s like giving the imagination a triple shot of espresso: your mind goes crazy imagining all that could happen next. The author has said that she has no intention to do any more on the story. I would love for her to expand, but I believe that the story itself is fine.

Overall, this story deserves a read. It may be short, but there is plenty of quality packed into the little cupcake;)

The Answering Machine

Title: The Answering Machine

Category: Spider-Man/Avengers crossover

Characters Who Make An Appearance: Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Pepper Potts, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Peter Parker/Spider-Man

Relationships in Story: Tony/Pepper (minor)

Author: Laliel

Story Summary: Director Fury tries to contact the Avengers to save New York City from a giant lizard hell-bent on destruction but gets the answering machine instead. MOVIE-VERSE, The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man!

gammathetaalpha’s thoughts: This fun little one-shot features irritated Nick Fury attempting to contact one of the Avengers to deal with a little lizard mess down in New York. Unfortunately, all of his super secret boy band are unable to be contacted, and a certain friendly neighborhood vigilante must take care of the mess instead.

I thought this one-shot was worth mention because it has qualities almost everyone looks for in a classic Spider-Man/Avengers oneshot. The Avengers don’t do their job, but Spider-Man saves the day. I loved the little glimpses at each of the Avengers lives sans chaotic alien invasion. This story follows my criteria for a good fanfiction. If you’re looking for something short and fun, try this one.

Sin Eater

Title: Sin Eater

Category: Captain America

Characters Who Make An Appearance: Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, OC, Nick Fury, Natasha/Black Widow, Clint/Hawkeye, Coulson, Skye, Simmons, Steve Rogers/Captain America. Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, etc.

Relationships: Bucky Barnes/OC, Pepper Potts/Tony Stark

Author: Cuckoo on a String

Story Summary: He can’t remember. She can’t forget. Sometimes picture perfect doesn’t mean it’s a perfect picture. Nick Fury’s secret Compendium is in jeopardy after the events of TWS, and when the sky is falling, the ugly stuff hits the fan. AoS cameos. Rated for language and violence.

gaqmmathetaalpha’s Thoughts:

Hal, as far as everyone at SHIELD is concerned, is a janitor. She doesn’t ask questions, she stays out of the way, and keeps entirely to herself. Exactly what is expected.

Underneath the janitor mask, however, is a library of all of SHIELD’s secrets, weak points, and sins. If Fury doesn’t trust it in a file, it’s carefully stored in the girl with the best memory on the planet.

But when Hydra takes over SHIELD, her cover as just an ordinary Level One is destroyed. Now, Hal must fight for her life and the secrets the Compendium within her holds.

Sin Eater is a compelling, angst-filled tale of identity and trust. I was especially a fan of the author’s focus on identity. In a world of spies and lies, you are what the circumstances call for, whether that’s a Winter Soldier or an invisible janitor with all of SHIELD’s secrets in your head. The author creates a tale of manipulation and lies.

Hal also finds herself held captive by the Winter Soldier, a person that was, just like her, made into a tool and a pawn. They struggle with their differences and with the darkness inside them both.

This story is well worth the read, especially if you enjoy emotional tension and tales of finding yourself.

What They Wouldn’t Do

Title: What They Wouldn’t Do

Category: Daredevil, MCU

Characters Who Make An Appearance: Matt Murdock/Daredevil, OC, Foggy, Karen, Father Lantom

Relationships: Matt/OC, (suggested) Foggy/Karen

Tags: Slowburn Matt/OC, hurt, comfort, romance, incomplete

Author: Ashevillain

Story Summary: Sarah is a secretary at Orion, a shady company previously owned by Wilson Fisk. When Daredevil begins investigating Orion, Sarah accidentally discovers his true identity, and he’s not pleased. Despite her best efforts to avoid him after figuring out who he is, she quickly finds herself on the receiving end of a Daredevil interrogation in a dark alley. Post S1, Eventual Matt/OC.

gammathetaalpha’s Thoughts: In this story by Ashevillain, we meet world-weary Sarah, who is working at Orion as a secretary in order to pay her father’s debts. When she accidentally figures out Daredevil’s identity, she is forced into more peril than she could ever imagine, but a possible way out of the bleak future garunteed at Orion.

This story is  on my top five list of favourite fanfictions. The reason for this is the author’s incredible OC, Sara. She is such a well-rounded, realistic character, that you can’t help but be pulled into her world.

The author also adds dimension to Matt’s character, all while staying true to the image already created by Marvel. Watching the two interact pulls you to the edge of your seat, as both characters feel as if they are real people really in the Marvel universe.

As with all well-written slowburn romances, you can’t help but anticipate the moment when the characters realize that despite all their differences, fights, and trials, that being without the other would be like losing oxygen. I promise you, that moment is well worth the lengthy wait that comes before it.

I haven’t even started on the action-filled plot, the firm grasp on basic writing mechanics, and the vivid imagery provided. Just for the characters alone, I would give this story a ten out of ten.

Should you read this story?

Is the sky blue? The answer to both questions, is yes.
